They wanted a refreshed look and a more modern design. Since they are affiliated with Stanford, we wanted their site to stand out from Stanford's archaic red and tan site color combo. The blue is cooling, but allows the site to pop among the greater Stanford ecosystem.
Rubik and Brandon Grotesque are slightly sharper fonts than most which deliver a very professional look for the website. Both fonts, however, still have soft edges that express the inviting warmth of the student run organization that's behind the site.
